What a warranty actually is

A warranty is a contract that covers the repair or replacement of specific components for a set period of time or mileage. It transfers certain repair risks away from you and onto the manufacturer or a third-party provider.

What warranties can cover

Coverage varies widely, but common categories include:

  • Powertrain: engine, transmission, and drivetrain components
  • Bumper-to-bumper: most factory components between the bumpers
  • Corrosion and rust-through protection
  • Roadside assistance and towing (on many plans)

Common exclusions to watch for

Most disputes come from what is NOT covered. Read the exclusions carefully:

  • Wear items: brakes, tires, wiper blades, and filters
  • Damage from missed maintenance or modifications
  • Environmental damage and normal wear and tear
  • Pre-existing conditions before the plan started

Questions you should ask

  • 1Is this a manufacturer or third-party warranty?
  • 2What is the exact term in years and miles?
  • 3Is there a deductible per visit, and how much?
  • 4Are repairs honored at any shop or only specific ones?
  • 5What maintenance must I document to keep it valid?
