Insurance is how you protect your vehicle and your finances from the unexpected. Understanding each coverage type helps you avoid gaps and overpaying.

Liability coverage

Liability pays for injury and property damage you cause to others. It is legally required in most states and is the foundation of any policy. Higher limits protect your personal assets if you are at fault in a serious accident.

Collision coverage

Collision pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a crash, regardless of who is at fault. It is usually required if you finance or lease the vehicle.

Comprehensive coverage

Comprehensive covers non-collision events — theft, vandalism, fire, weather, and animal strikes. It is what protects you from the surprises that have nothing to do with driving.

Gap protection

If your vehicle is totaled while you still owe more than it is worth, gap protection pays the difference between the insurance payout and your loan balance. It is especially valuable with low down payments or long loan terms.

Questions you should ask

  • 1What liability limits actually protect my assets?
  • 2Do I need collision and comprehensive on this vehicle?
  • 3Does my loan-to-value gap warrant gap protection?
  • 4What is my deductible, and can I afford it in an emergency?
  • 5Are rideshare or business uses excluded?
