Credit and why it matters

Your credit score signals risk to lenders. A stronger score generally unlocks lower interest rates, which can save thousands over the life of a loan. Checking your credit before shopping puts you in control.

APR vs. interest rate

APR (Annual Percentage Rate) reflects the interest rate plus certain fees, so it is the truest measure of what borrowing costs. Always compare offers by APR, not just the monthly payment.

Loan terms and total cost

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases total interest paid. Shorter terms cost more per month but far less overall.

  • Shorter term: higher payment, less total interest
  • Longer term: lower payment, more total interest and longer time 'upside down'
  • Always look at total cost, not just the monthly number

Smart budgeting

A sustainable rule of thumb: keep total transportation costs — payment, insurance, fuel, and maintenance — within a comfortable share of your monthly income, with an emergency buffer intact.

Questions you should ask

  • 1What APR do I qualify for, and for what term?
  • 2What is the total cost of the loan over its full term?
  • 3Is there a prepayment penalty?
  • 4How much should I put down to avoid being upside down?
  • 5How does the term affect my total interest paid?
